Parliament House Protest

Hey Everyone!

So I only have 13 days left here in Adelaide! That’s nuts the time really has flown by!  Some people have already started leaving…it sucks saying bye to friends knowing that you’ll most likely never see them again.   I just finished eating… Pat and I had dinner and watched an episode of Seinfeld.  I’m stuffed…and here in my room writing.  Think after this I’m gonna go get a coffee and go to the library to study for a couple of hours.  I have 2 exams which isn’t that bad.  It beats having 5 like some of my previous semesters! One is on the 24th and the other on the 27th.  Then I have a few days to just chill out and relax before my flight back home.

I was looking over my itinerary and I’m not sure if my travel agent gave me enough time to get through customs!  On the way here in February I ended up missing my flight from Sydney to Adelaide bc of this!  I called Marlin Travel last night and spoke with someone.  The person who I booked my flights through isn’t going to be in till Monday so I’ll call back.

I was going to the gym the other day with Pat & on the way we saw a protest (related to job cuts) taking place out front of the Parliament House.  I was able to get a few pics!

Coffee time!

Only a Month Left??!

Hey Everyone!

Well… I only have 27 days left here in Adelaide! Seems so close now… even a week ago it felt like much longer being a month and a bit but now it’s less than a month!  I just watched a replay of the Vancouver Canucks game- shocked how Game 2 ended- only 11 seconds into overtime…  The Cup’s coming back to Canada baby! I had a hockey game yesterday…we tied 3-3.  I scored but the ref called it off!! What a rip! It shoulda been a goal, he screwed us!

Last night, I went to Hotel Tivoli (which is our hockey club’s sponsor)  with Andrew & Josh who are both Australians and 2 of my close friends.  It was my buddy Benny (from hockey) & his bro’s bday.  We were there for lil over an hour then came back to Urbanest.  James (from hockey) came back with us too and we chilled for couple hours before we went back out.  I introduced him to a bunch of my Canadian friends then we went to his work party at PJ O’Briens’s.  Jame’s loves Canada, he lived there before for a few months… he’s been to Banff, Montreal & I thiiink BC.  He’s the one who told me where to get Clamato juice for Caesars lol He told me of a website… USA Foods where you can order various grocery items that you can’t find here in Australia.  Believe me I paid a premium!lol It was almost 40 buxx with shipping from Melbourne for 2 jugs!  That’s insane lol I made Caesars for my friends…. most people think they taste weird but the Indians enjoy spice & love em!lol

Tonight, I’m going to a dinner party at my friend Dak’s house.  He lives in North Adelaide which is about 20 minutes from the city.  I met him through Harry whom is one of my best friends that lives in Urbanest with me.  Daks is Sri Lankan and apparently an awesome cook… So guess I ‘ll find out tonight! I like trying different food that I normally wouldn’t have eaten before.  Having met so many people from various cultures over here has allowed me to try different things that I never would have known I like!

K, I’ll try to take some pics tonight… I know… pictures have been lacking on here lately 😛

Cheers!

GO CANUCKS GO!

Hey Everyone!

I missed may 2-4 long weekend!!! That sucked… I woulda been up at the trailor. Definitely one of my favourite holidays back home in Toronto 😛  I just got back from the gym and outta the shower.  It’s so weird, I’ve never ever ever ever seen people work out in jeans and dress shoes till I came here??? It’s not a one time thing here… it’s whenever I go to the gym… so weird maybe it’s a cultural things, I can’t wrap my head around it lol.  I worked today in home electronics till 5 then bought some long distance calling cards and got a haircut on the way home from work.  Ate, did a little uni work then went to the gym!  Weird… I never would have called it “uni work” before…. always homework lol. I guess being away for so long you do pick up little things.  One thing that’s gonna be weird when I come home is getting used to my old food, coffee etc.  I’ve been here for 4 months now and have some regulars on my grocery list that consists of some things that I can’t find back home.  I’m starting to reeaaally like the coffee here too… I wonder how Timmy’s is gonna taste when I get back??!

My hockey team won on Sunday 2-1.  It was a pretty tight game… tied 1-1 until the last 5 minutes.  I’m getting more comfortable playing field hockey and fiiiinally starting to get used to playing with that weird stick.  They only have right handed sticks and back home I shoot left.  I’m right handed, but I shoot left…. people on my team just don’t get it lol They think I should be left handed lol It’s kinda like learning how to throw with your wrong arm or swing a baseball bat the opposite way of which you would normally.

I went to the doctors the other day cause I had an ear ache.  It was awesome… I walked in sat down for 1 minute then one of the doctors called me in!…. waiting times is one thing I DON’T miss about back home!  When I was there one of the lady’s at reception recognized me from work cause I helped her find an iPod dock a week or so ago.    We talked for a little then I left and went to uni.  Today when I was walking to work, the building where my bank is, was being evacuated.  There were police blocking off the area… wonder what happened?

I just want this week to ENNNNND! I have 2 assignments due Friday… ones done and submitted and the other one’s about 30% done.  I’ll get it done… it always comes together in the end 😉  The final international student party is on Friday and then its my friend Rhiannon’s birthday on Saturday.  I have hockey at 5pm Sat then come home, shower-eat then head out!  She’s Australian and met her bf here about a year ago.  He’s from Sweden and was here doing an exchange here like me.  She said he’s coming to visit in June so that’s cool I’ll get to meet him.

You better believe I’ve been watching the playoffs! Canucks & Bruins! That’s who I wanna see in the finals!  I watched Vancouver spank San Jose the other day 7-3.  Booyaah! I love NHL Gamecentre soooo sick! I can watch games live… re run games I missed- everything!  K time to eat!

Cheers!

Assignments Assignments Assignments!

Hey Everyone!

So it’s that time of the semester where all of your assignment due dates are coming!!! Don’t worry mom I’m not behind in my school work 😉 There’s one assignment coming up that’s actually pretty interesting.  It’s in my Global Experience class which is like an intercultural communications class.  It’s in groups of 2-4 and there has to be one cultural insider (Ozzie) and the rest of the group members can be made up of different country or ethnic backgrounds.  So I’m with another Canadian (Ashley) and our Ozzie is Sammy. The idea for the assignment is to connect cultures through ‘The Arts.’  Every group has to attend some sort of arts event whether it be a concert, drama play, an event at the museum or art gallery… anything really as long as it’s arts related.  I found out that SPORTS is not considered to be arts related.lol.   We then have to write a 2000 word paper on the event discussing various topics and theories that we learned throughout our lectures.

Sammy found a fashion show for us to attend.  So yeah I’m game… I’ve never been to a fashion show and it should be quite interesting experiencing something I’ve never done before especially here in Australia where fashion and trends are different that in Canada.

So I have a month and a half left??! It’s crazy thinking about it.  I’ve met soooo many awesome people here… it’s going to be hard to say bye 😦 If your reading this and considering going on exchange- DO IT! You’ll have the best time of your life!

Cheers!

Sydney!

Hey Everyone!

It’s Sunday & it’s abouuuut 10:30am (And yes Canadians say ‘about’ not ‘abooot!’ Everyone here thinks we say aboot lol damn Southpark! lol).  I was up early today… around 9ish, showered, ate & went out for a bit.  I just got back from Rundle Mall to buy some groceries etc. but they weren’t open yet! Everything opens at 11! Usually I’m not up this early on a Sunday it’s the first time that I’m too early lol… usually I’m too late getting to the supermarkets & everything’s closed.

So how does Gold Coast sound??? You like the pics? Friggin awesome right?! Sydney was great too.  Boycey and I caught our flight at 6am we were sooooo tired.  Went to bed around 1am which was after we did laundry, woke up at 3am packed and made our way to the airport.  I didn’t sleep on the plane, I watched a few episodes of Seinfeld on a mini DVD player that my parents got me for Christmas.  Soooo glad I brought that here with me it’s been soooo useful!! Boycey slept for the 2 hours (This guy manages to sleep wherever we are lol plane, train… 10 minute bus ride ..doesn’t matter he’s lights out!) When we got off the plane we were still dead tired (He’s prolly nice n rested by now from his little nappy nap) so we  found a corner by one of the gates and slept on the floor for maybe 3 hours.  When we got up we took the train to Port Jackson (Sydney Harbour).  One of the best things we did was buy a $75 transit pass when we left the airport.  It allowed us to travel everywhere by train, bus, & ferry during our stay. It would have been $30 alone just getting back and forth to the airport so it was well worth it. I would recommend to anyone that travels to Sydney to buy that pass.

So at this point we didn’t know where we were going to stay.  Boycey had been trying to get in touch with people from Sydney on  couchsurfing for 2 weeks now but noone was willing 2 host these two studs.  We spent a few hours around the Sydney Harbour Bridge/Opera House and then we went to eat at a rooftop restaurant.  I forget the name but it’s in one of the pics.  We each had steak, salad and mashed potatoes for $10! Booyah! After that we finally decided to stay at a hostel that was downtown Sydney.  We remembered that Mike (Host from Gold Coast) told us about HOSTELWORLD and how it was cheaper than booking directly from the hostel.  We search the hostels available and found X Base. This place was also in Boycey’s Australia travel book and was rated pretty high.  We booked it through Hostel World for $24/night. I had never stayed in a hostel before and never wanted to ever since I saw the movie Hostel lol. But it was solid! I’d definitely stay there again.  We stayed there for 2 nights then went to Blue Mountains for a night.  When we woke up we ate and then took the ferry over to Manly Beach which was about 30 minutes long and our transit pass covered the fee.  Manyly Beach was really nice… it was small but very scenic & peaceful.

The next day we went to Blue Mountains. The train ride was about 2 hours long and we didn’t have to pay because we had that pass I mentioned earlier. This was a very quiet town and a lot different than being downtown Sydney.  We stayed at small hostel called No14 and it was roughly $30/night.  In the evening we went out for a beer and played some pool.  Boycey finally met some fellow Irishmen lol. He was telling me that they’re all over Sydney but he’s the only Irish dude I’ve met since being here in Australia.  We left the Carrington at 1am when it closed and made some friends across the street where another restaurant/bar had just closed.  We made friends with some locals and ended up hanging out with them for the night.  One of their names was Shane and he was just amazed that there was now 3 of us lol (3 Shanes).  I really think that’s the main reason we ended up hanging out with this group all night lol All his friends were getting ready to leave and he made it a point to bring us along back to the house for an after party.

So the next day Boycey and I went to Echo Point and the mountains. We spent around 4-5 hours there and then took the train back into Sydney.  We were now on our way to the famous Bondi Beach! We stayed at YHA Bondi Beach there for the remaining 2 nights.  This hostel was ok.  X Base was waaay better! So we got there on Good Friday and ofcourse EVERYTHING is closed by the time we arrive in Bondi… so that means no groceries, no booze no nothing! We checked in and went out for a little and the nightlife ended at 10pm! We got ripped!lol

The following day we went to this awesome breakfast place called Neds.  The breakfast was ok but the burrito was minnnt! We then went surfing for the day and then headed back to the hostel.  We picked up a couple of frozen pizzas and kinda cooked them when we got back lol There was no oven so we cooked them in the frying pan …. kinda messy and somehow the toppings evaporated but it still tasted just as good lol.  We ended up hanging out with a group of guys from Melbourne that I met earlier that morning in the computer lobby when I was eating breakfast and having my morning coffee…. gotta get that morning coffee in 😉  So we hung out on the rooftop of YHA for a few hours then we all grabbed taxis to head out.  It was a fun night and it was cool meeting more ozzies and going out with them.  We got back to the hostel and crashed then woke up and our vacation was over! It was time to go to the airport and fly back to Adelaide 😦   It’s weird because once we got off the plane and made our way back to Urbanest… it was the first time that Adelaide actually felt like home. I was happy to get back to my apartment… shower in my own bathroom and sleep in my own bed!

Cheers!

Gold Coast!

Hey Everyone!

I just got back from a 10 day vacation-wait a sec… Am I not already on vacation??! lol School’s been out for Easter break so during that period my buddy Boycey and myself went to Gold Coast for 5 nights then Sydney for 5 nights. It was AWESOME!

I think I enjoyed Gold Coast more. We stayed with 2 dudes (Mike & Tom who were around 21ish) who Boycey contacted on Couchsurfing. Boycey told me about this site which he has used before when traveling.  How “couchsurfing” works you ask… Well, it’s a website that places travelers in touch with people who are willing to host them free of charge. Hosts have reviews from past guests so you know what you’re getting yourself into.  We arrived in Gold Coast April 14th and they were real inviting and pretty much said “This is your home for the next 5 nights, make it your home!” They had a big flat-screen and satellite which was minnnnt! They let us use the computer anytime we wanted also which was pretty solid.  In the morning they left for work and we didn’t see them till late at night. It’s pretty cool how they can just trust 2 complete strangers in their home… I was thinking to myself if I could do that and I really don’t know if I could lol They said they’ve hosted over 100 people and they’ve never had any problems.

We went to Surfers Paradise a few times where I fiiiiinally went surfing!!! It was pretty difficult for the first half hour but after that I had no problems getting up, standing and riding. Surfers reminded me on Niagara Falls (The Canadian side).  We went on a pub crawl that consisted of a free bbq and 5 free drinks (1 at each bar).  The guy originally wanted 60 buxx each but we got him down to $20! The nightlife was awesome and Snoop Dog was in Surfers hosting a beach party while we were there.   So on the pubcrawl night, we were surfing till about 5pm then went to the Beer Garden where the pub crawl/bbq began. We ate, had our free drink then went back to our place to shower & change.  We then went out with Mike & Tom to a birthday party at a Mexican restaurant which was about a 7 minute bus ride. It was fun hanging out with them and their friends. We then made our way to Surfers to catch up with the pubcrawl and…. yeah, it was a fun night!lol

On our last day, we met up with Anna (a girl from Ryerson who stays at Urbanest in Adelaide). She arrived the night before and was couchsurfing also. So we rented a car and climbed a mountain! This was my first time driving on the left had side of the road and in a car with the steering wheel on the right side of the vehicle. First time in the pouring rain wasn’t that fun!! I think I had Boycey and Anna freaked out a few times lol But I got us there alive 😉

We climbed Mount Warning which is 4.5 kms to the top.  This was the first time I’ve climbed a mountain & it was awesome! The view was amazing and got better and better the higher we climbed- until we reached the top and couldn’t see anything because of the fog (guess that’s just another reason to come back right??) We were dead tired 3 hours later when we reached the car and drove into town to grab some food.  There were many restaurants but none were open on a Monday! It took us half an hour walking around to find a place to eat lol We ended up eating in a small cafe and had some yummy lasagna.  The hot shower felt soooooo good when we finally got back to our place. We had a pretty chills night just taking it easy and woke up at 3am to pack and catch our flight to Sydney.

Cheers!

…Check back in a few days to see how Sydney went!
