Hey Everyone,

This morning I was an early bird… woke up 8:30 ish and went to the gym.  I rather go in the mornings and get it over with and I feel more energetic throughout the day.  I just got back from class… Consumer Behaviour.  I go back in an hour where I have a tutorial from 3-5.  So now I’m just having a lil snack… some cereal, choc chip cookies and glass of orange juice.

I got my hair cut yesterday so I’m feeling nice fresh n clean 😉 It’s hard finding and trusting a new barbar when I’ve been going to the same woman for over 2 years! The first couple weeks I was here, one of my buddies told me where he goes so I tried it out.  I went to Chinatown and that dude chopped all my hair off!lol It was short as hell!  I’ve gone to this woman twice since and she’s awesome.  Soooo close too! I walk out of my apartment building and it’s literally a 30 second walk lol

Today’s the last day of classes! Booyah!! My flatmate Boycey (Irish dude) and I are flying to Gold Coast on the 14th and were gonna spend 5 nights there then head to Sydney for 5 nights. Should be a solid little trip!

The Leafs got eliminated from playoffs last night! They alllllwaaaays do this… start playing really well towards the end of the season but it’s too late by then.  I have hockey tonight around 8… bought a new stick yesterday… 50 buxx from Rebel Sport in Rundle Mall.  Decent stick, think it was on clearance or something cause that was the only one. All the others ranged from $80-$150.

Last night I went to the Adelaide Town Hall on King William Street to listen to Dr. Gill Hicks.  She is an Adelaide native who has been living in London for several years now & was a victim of the 2005 subway bombing in which 52 people died.  She lost both of her legs below the knee and several of people around me were crying as she told her story.  She has an amazing personality (cracking jokes)lol & now she’s a “highly acclaimed peacemaker.”  In 2009 she won the award for Australian of the Year. The discussion was very inspirational! If you want to take a quick peak at her bio or listen to the podcast of the event click HERE!

K, time to lay down… relax, watch some seinfeld before I head back to class!

Cheers!

Ozzie Rules Football!

Hey Everyone,

So I went to my first AFL match yesterday! Port Adelaide Power played West Coast Eagles but lost 116-98.  I didn’t really know the rules (Shoulda checked online before going lol) but luckily there was a sheet of paper that one of my friends picked up from a booth that explained the game.  Once I read that I was able to understand and get into the game! The Port fans were really passionate for their team especially towards the end of the match.  On the bus ride home after the match, someone was talking about the other Adelaide team (Adelaide Crows) and another person yelled from the back of the bus, “If you say the C word (Crows) again your going to have a fist in your face!” I knew there was a rivalry between the 2 clubs but that really put it in perspective.

Last night was pretty crazy around here because India beat Sri Lanka to win the Cricket World Cup.  After the match, there were hundreds of India fans running through the streets celebrating.  It was pretty cool because one of my best friends here is from India and he was super happy telling me how everyone back home in India would be dancing in the streets right now lol He said that even if you were driving down the street fans would stop you and you’d have to get out and dance with them lol

K well time to get crackin on an assignment that’s due tomorrow!

Cheers!

Eggs, Rice & Ice Cream

Hey Everyone!

Just finished eating dinner and watching some of a movie (The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo) ..pretty good so far… not much of a dinner though kinda a lazy one.  I made scrambled eggs, toast and rice.  I discovered that it tastes pretty good on top of rice! Shred a little cheese, add a lil ketchup and hot sauce and booyah you’re good!

The other day, Greg Clarke, CEO of the Fringe Festival here in Adelaide gave a presentation to my class.  If you don’t know what the Fringe Festival is click the link to give you an idea.  It’s a month long and it’s Australia’s largest art festival with concerts, comedy, and artsy stuff.  The presentation started out kinda slow and boring but then it picked up and I was really interested in what he had to say.  He basically described his journey throughout his career from being a university arts student to becoming the CEO of the Fringe.

I’m tired today… It’s been hard getting some decent sleep here! I don’t know if our apartment buildings cursed but it’s not just me I hear it from a lot of people!  I had work from 12-5 today. Oh yeah- I started my job last week!lol It’s been pretty good… everyone’s friendly, hours aren’t bad and it’s good money.  I forgot how to tie a tie (double windsor knot) so just before my first shift last week I went on Youtube and found a video clip showing how… that saved my butt!lol I find that customers like talking to me… think it’s cause of the Canadian accent lol It’s good though cause it helps time go by faster.  So now I’m suuuuuper busy with school, work, volunteer work, the school hockey team and all the other everyday stuff.

I had an assignment due Friday, and two yesterday.  It always takes a couple of weeks to get back into the school routine once you’ve been off for summer break. Yeah… I said summer break! No snow here Toronto! 🙂 Sooooo right now I’m debating on getting off my butt and going to the gym orrrr having some vanilla raspberry ice cream, laying in bed and watching the rest of my movie then powernap for an hour before my buddy Harry gets home from work.  It’s his birthday today so he’s having some peeps up at his place for a few beers.  I reeeeally don’t feel like hanging out tonight cause I’m suuuuper tired, I have class tomorrow and I work after that. But! … powernaps do wonders!

Cheers!

My First Month in Adelaide

Hey Everyone!

…Just got in. It’s a laaaazy Sunday today. I was downstairs with a few peeps watching some of the March Madness NCAA basketball tournament. The elevators are broken so everyone has to use the stairs. I live on the 7th floor so it’s not bad but one of my buddies I was watching basketball with lives on the 19th floor. He’s a lazy bum lol and is prolly just gonna stay downstairs till they get fixed on Monday. Nothing much to do today… the gyms closed on Sundays and it’s been crappy out all day raining on and off.

So the first month was pretty busy and I feel that I’m not having a hard time adjusting to the culture here in Australia. Well, it’s not as big of a difference for “me” (coming from Canada) compared to someone coming from saaay the Mid East. I’ve gotten used to the Ozzy accent and I have found that Australians love my Canadian accent! lol Funny cause I never knew I had one!

Sooooo what else have I done since I’ve been here?? Hmmm… I started doing some volunteer work with Animals Australia.  It’s an animal protection organization which investigates and exposes animal cruelty. I have just been working at the market booth speaking to the public about some of the issues. It’s been great so far, the people I volunteer with are awesome and I thought it’d be a good idea to get involved in the community while I’m here. And it’s something to keep me busy!

I went to Adelaide Zoo and Cleland Wildlife Park a few weeks ago with friends from Urbanest (Where I live). We saw dingos, kangaroos and koalas. The kangaroos were sooooo funny! The baby ones were awesome and some of the older ones look like grumpy old men lol They have really big chest muscles too as you can see in the pics cause they be liftin weights! 😛 The koalas just kept eating! It was really cool cause we could pat them and take photos while they were feasting on eucalyptus leaves. The kangaroos were super friendly… you could just walk up to them and they would eat out of your hand. I was kinda scared/nervous at first when approaching and touching them but after doing it a few times I began to feel comfortable because it was just like petting a dog.

I also went to two outdoor concerts in Adelaide. That’s what I love about living downtown- everything is soooo close within walking distance. I went to Soundwave and Futures Music Festival. Iron Maiden headlined Soundwave and Rob Zombie, Queens of the Stone Age, Slash (From Guns n Roses), Slayer, Less Than Jake, Pennywise, and Millencolin were some of the other big names that played.  Futures had The Chemical Brothers, MGMT, Dizzee Rascal, Sander Van Doorn and yeah… Ke$ha lol Some of my friends saw Kesha at the end of the night walking down the street in front of our building with her bodyguards. They said hi to her but she ignored them cause she’s a big super star right??lol

I also found a job! I work at a big department store in Adelaide. I got pretty lucky actually. I had a stack of maaaaybe 20 resumes? to hand out and this was the first place I handed one. They said it was really good timing… so we sat down and had a 15 minute interview. It was kind of weird lol I haven’t had an interview in soooo long maybe 5 years! I’ve been working at a tool & die shop since then. When I left I felt pretty confident and didn’t even bother handing out anymore and I got a call the next day saying I got the job! Booyah!! I completed my training and I start this week. Training was sooo boring… training for any job always is I guess. Watch videos and blah blah blah lol One thing that I was confused about was the term “Lay-by”?? A manager was speaking to us trainees and I was lost. I quietly asked the girl beside me what the heck a lay-by was and then I realized the manager was talking about a “Lay-a-way!” That’s just an example of different words being used in a different culture which can cause misunderstandings.

I think your pretty caught up now! 🙂 I’m heading back downstairs to watch more of the NCAA March Madness! Hopefully these friggin elevators get fixed soon!

Cheers!

Moving to Australia

Hey Everyone!
So here’s my first post! I’ll update you on what I’ve been up to…

I’ve been living in Adelaide, Australia for about a month now. The few days before I left Toronto I was kinda nervous and I wasn’t sure what to expect once I got here but everything’s been great! Well besides the riiiidiculously long flight!lol Oh, and my luggage was lost in Sydney and I missed my connecting flight to Adelaide lol Everything turned out ok though… the airport gave me $100 and delivered my luggage to my apartment a few days later. Other than that I’m loving it here! I left -6 degrees and arrived in +32 so no complaints about the weather 🙂

I live at Urbanest. It’s an apartment building for students. It’s really nice here… brand new too, they just opened February 1st. There’s a bunch of people from Ryerson University (My home school) here. I didn’t really know them in Toronto (we met a couple times) but we’ve hung out quite a bit here. Another girl Kat lives in my apartment and shes from Ryerson. My other flatmates are Patrick from Northern Territory, Australia… Hollie I thinnnk France and she’s been living in Australia for awhile now. Shane is from Ireland and another guy from Sri Lanka. I’m not sure what his name is we’ve only seen him maybe twice??lol Everyone’s pretty cools and we all get along well.

One of the first things I noticed is that everything is SOOO expensive here! It’s expensive if you bring your own money but if you live here and work and earn their wage then it balances out. A case of water is like 12 buxx and it’s around $30 for a case of Coke! They drive on the left side of the road here so that took a little to get used to. At first it was weird crossing streets because I naturally look left first and walk out but after almost being smoked by a few cars I started to get the hang of it.

I’m studying at UniSA (University of South Australia) and started classes 2 weeks ago. I work out at University of Adelaide’s gym. I tried a few diff places here when I first arrived in Adelaide but they’re super expensive. Next Generation was $175/month and Fitness First was around $125. The school gym is pretty decent and it’s only $180 for 6 months so you can’t beat that.

I’ve met soooo many new friends here. In Adelaide, there are soooo many international students from all over the world. I was at a party the first week I got here and took a second and just thought to myself this is an amazing experience. I was looking around the table and thinking to myself this is the whole world in one backyard lol There were people from India, United States, Holland, Brazil, France, Sri Lanka… everywhere! It was kinda weird that I was the only Canadian lol Weird… but cool at the same time.

K… well you’ve heard a little about what I’ve been doing now it’s time to eat! I’ll tell you some more next time!

Cheers!
